Hearing and balance disorders caused by the lossof inner ear hair cells isa.common problem encountered in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The postembryc:mlc production of hair cells in cold·blooded vertebrates has been known for several decades, and recent studies in the avian inner ear after ototoxic drug and noise damage have demonstrated a remarkable capacity for both anatomic and functional recovery. The regeneration of sensory hair cells has been shown to be integral to this repair process. Current work is focusing on the cellular progenitor source of new hc:lircells and the trigger mechanism responsible for inducing hair cell regeneration. Preliminary studies suggest that reparative proliferation may also occur, in the mammalian inner ear. Work in this field is moving at a rapid pace. The results thus far have yielded optimism that direct stimulation of hair cell production or transplantation of IMng hair cells may eventually become treatment modalities for the damaged human Inner ear. These proposals wouid have been considered unrealistic less than 10 years ago, but they now have caught the full attention of both clinician and researcher. (OTOlARYNGOl HEAD NECK SURG

Review Paper: A Review on Brain Stimulation Using Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound

Brain stimulation techniques are important in both basic and clinical studies. Majority of well-known brain stimulating techniques have low spatial resolution or entail invasive processes. Low intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) seems to be a proper candidate for dealing with such deficiencies. This review recapitulates studies which explored the effects of LIFU on brain str...

Common Statistical Pitfalls in Basic Science Research

T he analysis of clinical samples, population samples, and controlled trials is typically subjected to rigorous statistical review. This fact is understandable, given that the results of clinical investigation will often be used to inform patient care or clinical decision making. One would not want to predicate patient advice on research findings that are not correctly interpreted or valid. For...

Apoptotic and Autophagic modulation by nicotine

Cigarette smoking is growing and nicotine is considered as the most adverse agent in the cigarette smoking. Nicotine is an alkaloid and forms 90% of alkaloids of cigarette. Nicotine is accountable for creating disorders and cancers such as lung cancer, heart disease and chronic lung disease. Nicotine can be considered as an autophagy and apoptosis inducer which can either directly or indirectly...

The essential role of basic science in medical education: the perspective from psychology.

Probably ever since the Flexner report endowed basic scientists with a central role in the education of doctors, the same basic scientists have been engaged in active, but circular, debates about why basic science really is essential to medical education. The arguments are generally at the theological level and can easily be dismissed by critics as self-serving. There is little evidence in the ...
